“WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?” Quinn asked, kneeling beside her in the garden. A slight breeze lifted her dark hair, then it settled back down, framing her lovely face. Cady knew she owed Quinn. After their kiss and date, and then her frustration, she had to make things right between them.

“I’m taking up the mantle of my destiny or some such shit.” Cady patted the mound of mulch around the rosebush. It was cool and pliant beneath her hands, and the earthy scent drifted around her. “Mom says the more time I spend with the flowers, the better I’ll get to know them, and the more comfortable I’ll become with the earth element.”

“Well, I talk to spirits, and I don’t hear a damn thing from these thorny bastards.” Quinn flicked at one of the leaves with her forefinger.

“From what I understand, plant spirits are very different from animal and human spirits. They communicate differently. Just because you don’t hear them doesn’t mean...” Cady froze and stared at the rose bush. “Oh my gosh.”

“What is it? Did it prick you?” Quinn peered at her hands.

“No.” She sat back on her heels. “It thanked me for defending it.” Head canted to the side, she regarded the bush and then said, “Um, you’re welcome.”

Rising to her feet, Cady returned to the small garden shed to put her implements and the bag of mulch back in their places. As she shut the door, she felt Quinn standing right behind her. Warmth radiated from her body, and since the morning thunderstorm had cooled the air, Cady wanted to lean back into her.

“So, are we ever going to talk about where this is going?” Quinn’s question was, perhaps, the heaviest one Cady had to face out of all the others.

“Quinn,” she said hesitantly, before turning to face her. “Do you remember that spell I cast – the circle around us with the flowers and herbs when we were little?”

“How could I ever forget?” Quinn stood looking down at her, a half-smile on her face. “You wanted me to love you purely and completely, forever.”

“Yes, I know. I was wondering something about it. Did that working ever change how you felt about me?”

Quinn reached out to rest one hand on Cady’s waist and the other on her shoulder. “My feelings for you never changed, because I loved you from the start. If that hasn’t been obvious, then maybe you need glasses.”

“Oh,” was all Cady could say as Quinn leaned forward to kiss her. When she stepped back to look at her afterwards, Cady said, “Well then, I guess that was an unnecessary spell.”

“Magick isn’t necessarily about major change. Energy follows the path of least resistance. Didn’t you remember at least that much from your mother’s teachings?”

“Very funny – she said practically the same thing last night. I’m afraid I was a terrible student when I was a child.” She shivered in Quinn’s arms and wondered if there was a spell she could cast to soak in her warmth.
